Kristy's Practice Shoot

I was home a while back and took some pictures of an old friend. She was a real trooper standing by some busy roads downtown Newbern. She had quite an audience! Especially once the train came through and the cars were stopped just watching us. I hope she felt special and not embarrassed.

Needless to say the pictures turned out wonderfully. Kristy is very photogenic and knows what she's doing in front of the camera. Kudos Kristy! Thanks again.

P.S. She's ready to go take some more pics. :)

Denver Lady to run Music City marathon

My excellent friend in Colorado is planning on visiting in April to run the Music City half marathon. I'm so proud of how far she's come with her training. She tries hard to convince me to run myself, but that's just laughable. Deep down I'd love to run a half marathon and I'm currently trying to get myself into better shape. So it's not out of the question that one day I would run one, but April? HA! No offense Denver Lady, but I think I'd do better on the sidelines cheering you on. :)

Anyway, Denver Lady visited in October and we took some running related pictures. It was actually quite fun! The last shot is not related, but visually interesting.

I promise this isn't the Esmé blog, even though she certainly deserves her own blog. It's just that I'm with her everyday and she's my most loyal test subject. We tested new flash diffusers (Gary Fong's Lightsphere and the Omni bounce) not too long ago. I must say I really do like the Lightsphere despite its price. Anywho, I took some pictures of Esmé in her Valentine's outfit, which she wore three days after the fact since I completely forgot about buying it. Oh well.

Newbern, TN

While visiting my parents a few weeks back I took some random pictures around the house. My Uncle stopped by and played some tuneskies on the guitar and my sister-in-law, nieces and nephew drove up from Memphis to visit Esmé. Esmé really takes to her oldest cousin when she's around. Sarah is going to be a natural at motherhood.

Self-portrait anxiety

It's been a long time since I've had any sort of proper picture taken of myself. I decided a few days ago that I would get cleaned up, put a little makeup on, put on my Sunday go-to-meetin' clothes, pull out the tripod and do a self-portrait. I had a self-portrait assignment in one of my classes and it was absolutely the hardest assignment I've had yet. One would think that taking a picture of yourself couldn't be difficult, but for me it was. First there's the technical aspect of getting a sharp picture when you have nothing and no one to focus on. I found out that a water bottle is a great assistant. Then there's the whole thing of smiling for the camera. Well, I won't go on, but it'll be a long time before I do that again.

I'd love to know which one you think is best. Leave me a comment, please!

Happy -belated- Valentine's Day

Seeing as I need something to post and having a few photos of Esmé from Valentine's day, I figured I'd post those. I have to explain the not-so-good quality of the pictures. For Christmas I received a new camera (Canon 40d) and a new lens (50mm 1.8II). Not 2 months later I broke the new lens!! It literally flew out of my backpack attached to my new camera. Thank goodness the camera was fine, but the lens was not so lucky :( To show you how awesome my husband is, he went out and bought me a new one, but not right away. So these pictures were taken with a kit lens (Canon 18-55). The third picture is what happens when you get punched in the face by a balloon.

Like most babies, Esmé (my daughter) has a 'lovey'. It's a little soft baby clown that was purchased at Gymboree and given to her as a gift. She's not parted with it since. Quickly realizing her attachment, my husband and I set out to buy another as a backup. We knew it wasn't going to be easy when we found out that they had stopped making Gymbo! We couldn't find him in any of their stores. My husband decided to try eBay and we found another Gymbo in perfect condition for $1. Esmé does not know that the double exists, but he's ready whenever something unfortunate happens to Gymbo #1.

In the beginning

My name is Emily and I love photography. I've been taking pictures since 2004 and have truly enjoyed every minute of it. There's no exciting story about how I received my first brownie camera when I was 2 and was developing my own film when I was 4. Nope, nothing like that. In fact, I bought my own first camera (Canon SII SLR) and it came from eBay for $100. I signed up for my first photography class and was sold. I knew immediately that I wanted to take this as far as I possibly could.

In addition to classes, I absorb myself in the Photo.Net forum and I try to assist professional photographers whenever possible. If you're also a photographer I highly recommend this site. But anyway, I decided to start this photo blog for two reasons. 1) It's inevitable that i'll have a photo blog since it seems to be expected of photographers these days. 2) I've tried having a regular blog and I just didn't have the words to write. This time my photos will be my words.

I hope that everyone enjoys my pictures and leaves comments. I'm always looking for words of encouragement and constructive criticism. For this post there will be no pictures (oddly enough), but instead a couple of links to my existing pictures.
